Frustrating. That is the only way you can describe Tiger Woods' opening round at the Buick Open. A two-time winner of the event, Woods went out at Warwick Hills on Thursday with two bogeys in his first five holes, it would have been three if not for a 20-foot par save after a plugged bunker lie on the par-4, 4th. Four birdies over his next nine holes got Woods back in the picture on a premium scoring day, but a bogey on 15, a failed birdie chance on the par-5 16th after a perfect drive and a missed five-footer for birdie on 17 left Woods, yet again, talking about missed opportunities.
It was a strange Tiger round, even though he was still able to shoot 1-under. Woods had 32 putts, and missed a handful of par putts he usually cashes, even when he's struggling. A 71 might not be bad normally, but it was a scoring day, and a lot of other golfers took advantage of it.
Leading the charge was Steve Lowery, who shot a 9-under 63, besting his low round of 2009 by three shots. The 48-year-old Lowery started on the back nine, going out in 34, but made seven birdies on the back nine en route to an inward 29 and the clubhouse lead on Thursday.
Just behind Lowery is John Senden, who finished with 64, and a large group of golfers at seven and eight-under. Notables in those groups include Paul Goydos (66), Corey Pavin (66) and Chris DiMarco (66), who hasn't had a top-10 this season.
The shot of the day landed with the man who had the shot of the week at last week's RBC Canadian Open. Leif Olsen, who you might remember banked in a hole-in-one, holed out again, this time on a the par-5 16th for an eagle.
