Looking to cycle spot-starters each day? Check out the Stream Team, where we tab pitchers that are likely to help you in your quest for fantasy gold. It's August, which means we have a full month of Stream Team data to analyze. In almost 150 innings, our pitchers notched eight wins and 109 strikeouts, posting a 4.40 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in the process. We've done even better since the All-Star break, as we've put together a 3.41 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 87 innings, with 73 Ks and four wins to our credit. Remember, these numbers come from the castoffs and unwanted in fantasy baseball, pitchers that are widely available in leagues.
Today, we rolled with Jeff Niemann against the Royals. He flourished for the Team, allowing just one run in eight innings while striking out seven en route to the win. Can we capture lightning in a bottle again on Sunday?
My recommendation for tomorrow posted quality starts in all six of his July starts, with three coming in his home park (which plays as a hitter's park) and the other three in Cincinnati, Colorado, and St. Louis. Sounds like an extremely difficult task for a pitcher, right? It must have come from an undoubtedly-talented hurler. Would you believe me if I said that the pitcher in question is none other than Jon Garland?
The Arizona pitcher normally doesn't strike out enough batters to be consistently stellar, but Garland recorded 24 Ks and just eight walks in July, a departure from a K/BB ratio that normally hovers around 1.0. Considering he put up a 3.00 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in hitter-friendly conditions last month, Garland has made himself an excellent spot starter in the right matchups.
Tomorrow, he takes on the Mets, a team whose second-best hitter is Jeff Francoeur. They've hit just 40 HRs against righties this season, 10 less than the 29th-ranked Giants. While they've been a better hitting team lately, Garland's recent success combined with New York's poor home performance this season gives us our pick for tomorrow.
