FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- In the aftermath of the Harry Douglas injury, the Atlanta Falcons made multiple roster moves on Thursday as the team added two receivers, cut an undrafted free-agent rookie, and lost another rookie to injury.Thursday morning started with the addition of unrestricted free agent Robert Ferguson, who signed a one year contract. Ferguson is a seven-year veteran of the NFL, most recently with the Minnesota Vikings. He only had three receptions last season but over his career has 151 receptions and 13 touchdowns.
"We like his skill set and he's going to have an opportunity to catch up real quick." said coach Mike Smith following afternoon workouts where Ferguson made an immediate statement catching a 50-yard touchdown pass from D.J. Shockley.
Marty Booker was the second free agent signed on Thursday. Booker has ten years experience in the league as a wide receiver and had two 1,000 yard receiving seasons in 2001 and 2002. Both the addition of Booker and Ferguson add much needed veteran leadership to a young group of receivers.
To make room for Booker on the roster, the Falcons had to cut rookie free-agent receiver Brandon Godfrey.
The fourth roster move came in the form of an injury. Second-round draft pick William Moore had an arthroscopic procedure done on his left knee Thursday morning. He is expected to miss two to four weeks.Missing two to four weeks doesn't sound bad until you consider the fact that Moore was a rookie battling Thomas DeCoud for a starting safety spot. Smith says Moore is, "gonna have to do some extra work in the classroom" while he cannot be on the field. The time missed may be too much for Moore to legitimately compete for the starting job for week one.
