How desperate are the Yankees for starting pitching depth? They traded Thursday for a guy who was 4-10 with a 5.13 ERA despite pitching in the National League and at a pitchers' park. The Padres traded right-hander Chad Gaudin to the Yankees for a player to be named.
With Chien-Ming Wang (shoulder) out and Phil Hughes entrenched as the main setup man in the bullpen, the Yankees had been using Sergio Mitre as the No. 5 starter -- and had almost no other options. But Mitre has a 7.50 ERA wth 32 hits allowed in 18 innings over four starts.
Gaudin, 26, had 56 walks in 105 1/3 innings for San Diego, which signed him in April after the Cubs released him. Over his past seven starts, Gaudin went 0-4 with a 5.45 ERA and 20 walks in 34 2/3 innings.
One scout called Gaudin a "middle reliever with a decent arm but below-average command and deception against left-handed hitters."
Sounds like a great fit in the AL East.
Gaudin either cleared waivers or made it to the Yankees before being claimed, which means even the Red Sox, with their pitching issues, passed on him.
For his career, Gaudin is 32-35 with a 4.58 ERA.
The Yankees this week also signed Russ Ortiz, released by the Astros, to a minor-league contract
