Left on Base is MLB FanHouse's link dump.

- David Weathers has been shipped to the Brewers for a player-to-be-named. It should help to shore up the Milwaukee bullpen, though it does nothing for the rotation -- which, outside of Yovani Gallardo, is pretty damn awful.

- Apparently David Eckstein is not too worried about winning anymore. The 34-year-old middle infielder, who already has two world series rings, had the chance to be traded to the Twins and turned it down. The Twins are hanging in the AL Central race for dear life, so it's not like the postseason was a given. Still, the Padres are far out of anything relevant and are one of the worst teams in baseball.

- Also in Padres news, Chris Young is probably going to miss the rest of the season. The silver lining is that the Padres will continue to get looks at myriad young pitchers. They can use the rest of this lost season to audition guys before planning out the 2010 rotation.

- Aaron Boone, who underwent open heart surgery just before the beginning of the 2009 regular season, is getting ready to begin a rehab assignment. Good for Aaron, and we definitely wish him the best.

- Jeff Samardzija will be making his first major league start this week, as he joins the Cubs' rotation with Carlos Zambrano on the disabled list. He better make it count, because it's likely to be his only start in 2009. Zambrano is only planning on missing one start, Ted Lilly should be back soon, and if everyone is healthy, Tom Gorzelanny would be the Cubs number six option.

- The Red Sox have reportedly put a waiver claim on Cristian Guzman, the .300-plus hitting shortstop of the Nationals. They haven't really been able to find an answer at short this season, what with the trade of Julio Lugo and the injury issues of Jed Lowrie. If the Red Sox are awarded the claim, they'll have 48 hours to complete a trade with the Nats -- and the Nats could also elect to pull Guzman back.
