Tip-Off Timer counts down the days until the first game of the 2009-10 season. On Tuesday, there are exactly 77 days remaining.Surely there was at least one NBA center who greeted Gheorghe Muresan with the same plea offered by Billy Crystal in the My Giant trailer: "Oh please don't say 'fee fi fo fum.' "
Muresan wore number 77 and stood 7-foot-7. Along with Manute Bol, he is the tallest man ever to play in the NBA. If the league was the Transylvania Alps, the Romanian center was Moldoveanu peak.
Remembered mostly for his size, Muresan was no slouch on the court. He was named the NBA's Most Improved Player for the 1995-96 season, after leading the league in field goal percentage (.584). The following season Muresan converted on 60.4 percent of his attempts, again good for best in the league.
His immense size and genial demeanor made him a hit off the court as well. Thankfully his curious commercial appeal is well documented on YouTube.
ESPN used "Ghitza" -- Romanian for "Little George" -- in two SportsCenter commercials. He ate lunch with Lil' Penny and danced with Karl Ravech and Kenny Mayne. I dare you not to giggle as Gheorghe grooves. Not possible. And Muresan was also the ventriloquist to Eminem's dummy in the music video for My Name Is. Quite a resume.
According to IMDB, Muresan will appear in the 2010 film Serial Buddies along with Christopher Lloyd and Maria Menounos. If you're thinking about taking a date to the film, make sure you smell your best. Of course, Muresan can help with that too:
