Michael VickAs Michael Vick continues his attempt to rehabilitate his public image, he's continuing to get help from an unlikely ally: The Humane Society of the United States, which has posted a video of Vick speaking about animal abuse on its official YouTube channel (video below the jump) .

"If you own a pet you need to love him with all your heart," Vick says in the video, speaking at an event in Chicago that the Humane Society arranged.

In the video, Vick hits on the main points that he's been told by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie that he needs to make: He's sorry, he knows participating in dogfighting was wrong, and he wants to be a good role model going forward.

"Now I want to help," Vick says. "I don't want no person in this room to end up in prison behind something so pointless and so needless. We need to care about animals in general. They respect us, they're loyal and they depend on us to do the right thing at the end of the day."

Some might look at this video and say that Vick and the Humane Society are interested mostly in helping themselves: Vick's appearance in videos like this one gives the Humane Society attention, and working with the Humane Society gives Vick the ability to claim he's making amends.

For Vick's part, he is repeating his often-stated claim that he'll help more animals in his work with the Humane Society than he hurt in his role in the Bad Newz Kennels dogfighting ring.

"I wish I could take back some of the things that I did," Vick says. "But the solution is for me to help more animals than I hurt in the past."
