The Red Sox made a potential major upgrade to their bullpen Tuesday, acquiring Billy Wagner from the Mets for two players to be named later.Wagner, who is sixth all-time in saves with 385, was activated from the disabled list last week after almost a year of rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery. The left-handed reliever pitched two scoreless innings for New York, striking out four and walking one.
If Wagner is healthy and throwing like he did when he was closing for the Mets, the move will further strengthen Boston's already deep bullpen, giving Terry Francona an experienced setup option in front of Jonathan Papelbon and another southpaw to turn to in the late innings along with Hideki Okajima.
The Red Sox entered play Tuesday with the best bullpen ERA in the American League at 3.64.
