Randy JohnsonSAN FRANCISCO -- Randy Johnson, who has been out for nearly two months with a torn rotator cuff, said Sunday that his goal is to be ready to pitch out of the Giants bullpen in about two weeks.

"I never envisioned myself being a reliever, because I always wanted to pitch seven or eight innings, but at this point in my career, my shoulder may not be able to tolerate that," Johnson said.

Johnson said he's is not going to have surgery in the offseason to repair the tear, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's ready to announce that this would be his final season.

"I haven't got that far yet," he said. "I'm taking it one day at a time."

Johnson, who will be 46 on Sept. 10, is 8-6 with a 4.81 ERA this season. He won his 300th game in June. A few weeks later, though, he went on the disabled list with the shoulder injury. Johnson didn't even throw a baseball until last week.

He said he's got a rehab mapped out that would have him back with the team, ready to pitch, in two weeks. Although he didn't rule out being able to start by the end of the month, he said it's not realistic now to look at anything beyond pitching out of the bullpen.

"This team is very close, right on the doorstep of doing what this franchise has wanted to do," Johnson said. "I want to be a part of it in whatever capacity."
