Roderick HoodTuesday afternoon, the Chicago Bears announced via press release they have agreed to a one-year contract with cornerback Roderick Hood. In and of itself, this isn't terribly huge news, considering Hood was recently cut from the Cleveland Browns. The issue at hand, though, is the overall health of the Bears' secondary.

Between Charles Tillman, Nathan Vasher and Zackary Bowman, the Bears were expected to have their two starting cornerbacks and one solid backup. Instead, both Bowman and Tillman are hurt. Tillman doesn't expect to be ready for the final preseason game and he's even worried he won't be ready for the Week 1 tilt in Green Bay.

The Bears secondary has been a patchwork unit for the first three preseason games. Tillman, Bowman and Danieal Manning have missed all three games. Manning, a starting safety, will be ready to get some reps in the game Thursday night against the Browns, but it doesn't appear likely Bowman or Tillman will be ready to go just yet.

Trumaine McBride has been starting opposite Vasher in the exhibition games, but he's been pretty unimpressive. Corey Graham has spelled Vasher and done a nice job, so he'll likely remain in the mix. Expect Hood to get a look instead of McBride while both Bowman and Tillman remain sidelined with injuries. This will be his chance to curry favor with the defensive coaches, many of whom are either newcomers or in new positions.

Hood is a seventh-year veteran from Auburn. He had 5 interceptions (taking 2 for touchdowns) and 21 passes defensed in 2007 for the Cardinals, but took a step back last season in coverage. The Cardinals released him in a financial decision following the Super Bowl run. He also played in the Super Bowl for the Eagles.

Hood was unemployed for right around 24 hours, as he was released by the Browns Monday. With the move, the Bears had to release someone, and it ended up being Derek Kinder -- the rookie wideout from Pittsburgh.
