Looking to cycle spot-starters each day? Check out the Stream Team, where we tab pitchers that are likely to help you in your quest for fantasy gold.Much like August, September has started out well for the Team. Kyle Davies threw six innings of one-run ball to get us a win on Tuesday, and Trevor Cahill followed that up with another win today. I had a discussion with a co-commissioner friend of mine as to who should be the pick today, and we settled on Cahill as a middle-of-the-road, safe option.
I was leaning toward Brian Duensing, but the Vegas line had the Twins as an underdog, and that scared me away. Duensing went out and threw seven innings of shutout ball, striking out seven. Consider picking him up if you need pitching help down the stretch.
Tomorrow, Brett Tomko takes the mound against Seattle. Tomko made his first appearance for Oakland on August 17th against his former team, the Yankees. He shut New York down for five innings of scoreless ball, picking up a win in his first start of the year. He then struck out eight Tigers in six innings for another win in his next start. After a five-strikeout game In Los Angeles, Tomko is sporting a 1.62 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 14/4 K/BB ratio in his three starts with the A's. Take another look at his competition in those three starts: New York, Detroit, Los Angeles, the three division leaders in the AL.
By comparison, the Mariners should be child's play for Tomko. Here's their line over the past week: .199/.252/.317. That's a .569 OPS for the entire team. As a unit, the offense is hitting under .200. They seem like a great team to stream against. I like Tomko for another six-inning quality start, and he should deliver five-to-eight strikeouts again.
