In the fall of 2007, Brian Brohm was near the top of the college football world. Since then, not much has gone right.
His Louisville Cardinals flopped badly that season, missing out on the postseason. Expected to be taken in the first round of the NFL Draft, Brohm fell to the Green Bay Packers deep in the second. Seventh-round pick Matt Flynn beat him out for the job backing up Aaron Rodgers in 2008. Now, before his second season could begin, Brohm is looking for work.
The Packers announced their final cuts Saturday, releasing 18 players and placing four others on injured reserve. Brohm was among the cuts, meaning the Packers are down to two quarterbacks. One of those, Matt Flynn, was injured during Green Bay's second preseason game. The other, Rodgers, does have a notable history of injury in his pro career, though he has not missed a start in college or the NFL.
While some will be surprised by Brohm's release, there is good reason for it. There are just some college stars who have trouble adjusting to the pro game. Some will talk about in terms of having the game "slow down" for them. For Brian Brohm, the NFL game has not slowed down.
As a quarterback, he showed no ability to make good, quick decisions. He also had no confidence throwing anything more than checkdowns.
More surprising, perhaps, than Brohm being on the list of cuts is the presence of Anthony Smith on said list. Smith was one of just two unrestricted free agents the Packers brought in (the other was offensive lineman Duke Preston). Neither of them made the team. Smith was released despite seeming to have a good preseason. He may have lost out because of special teams.
Jarrett Bush, an accomplished special teams contributor, was one of those who beat Smith out for a roster spot. With fellow safety Charlie Peprah placed on injured reserve, the Packers may have felt the need to keep the better special-teamer.
The flaw in this was that Smith looked like he was very comfortable in the Packers' 3-4 scheme, a defense he played in with the Steelers. Bush didn't have the kind of preseason in that defense that Smith did.
Veteran wide receiver Ruvell Martin, rookie linebackers Brad Jones and Cyril Obiozor, offensive lineman and fifth-round pick Jamon Meredith, and rookie running back Tyrell Sutton were among the other cuts by the Packers. If Meredith clears waivers, it seems likely he will be brought back to the practice squad, once those moves are made starting Sunday.
Second-year cornerback Pat Lee and oft-hurting defensive tackle Justin Harrell were also placed on injured reserve.
The Packers announced a trade Saturday, too. They dealt former starting offensive lineman Tony Moll to Baltimore for defensive back Derrick Martin. The fourth-year pro will compete for playing time in Green Bay's banged-up defensive backfield.
