Vikings Cut John David Booty

When the Vikings and Brett Favre ended their dance and finally agreed to become an item, it was assumed that Tarvaris Jackson would be getting the short end of the straw. It was Jackson's play the last few seasons, after all, that led to the need for a new starter. Sage Rosenfels, the new acquisition via trade, and John David Booty, the developmental quarterback, seemed safe.

Yet Saturday, when the axe fell on the Vikings roster in their pursuit to trim to 53 players, it was Booty who found himself out of a job.

The team waived Booty, but he still has practice squad eligibility, meaning it's entirely possible the Vikings sign him and place him there. He can also sign onto any other team's practice squad.

The Vikings might still be looking to shop Jackson, hence his continued life on the team's roster, but he also helped his cause with a strong preseason that saw him outdo the underwhelming performances of Rosenfels and Booty. For a coach who has loyally stuck with Jackson through the (kinda) ups and (severe) downs, that sample size might have been enough to convince Brad Childress to keep Jackson around as the No. 2. Or Rosenfels could be the backup with Jackson serving as emergency quarterback. Or maybe Rosenfels and Jackson will merely exist to serve as extras in the next Wrangler commercial.

As a matter of fact, the presence of Favre hasn't done much to clear the team's murky situation. Sure, we might know who the starter is now, but everything after that is still an unknown ...

... Except that Booty won't be on the team's regular season roster. Yes, his old No. 4 is still there, but it was taken by the old graybeard. Along with his roster spot.
