Lane KiffinTennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton announced the Volunteers and Southern California are nearing a two-game agreement for games to be played in 2021 and 2022.

"Since Lane [Kiffin] mentioned it -- we do have a verbal to play SoCal in 21 and 22, but no contract yet. Another great series for the Vols and our fans."

The series will continue a tradition at both schools of playing extremely difficult out-of-conference opponents. USC plays Ohio State this weekend, and the Trojans have previously played Arkansas and Auburn from the SEC, as well as Virginia and Virginia Tech from the ACC in recent years, in addition to a yearly rivalry game with Notre Dame.

Meanwhile Tennessee has locked horns with California, UCLA, Notre Dame, Syracuse, and Miami in recent years in out of conference tilts. The Vols already have home-and-homes scheduled with Oklahoma, Oregon, Nebraska, and Ohio State in the next decade. Now, assuming the contract is finalized, go ahead and add USC to the roster.

At a time when many major conference schools continue to add cupcakes to their roster, the Vols and USC are moving in the opposite direction.

College football schedules are finalized so far in advance that it's impossible to forecast what to expect from both teams by then, but assuming they don't meet in a bowl between now and then, the USC-UT match-up will be the first time the two schools have ever met on the gridiron since 1981. In total, the teams have played four times, with USC winning all four match-ups.
