The New England Patriots and New York Jets are getting ready to punch each other in the face -- perhaps literally and figuratively -- and one player that won't be taking part in the festivities is Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker.

The team announced on its twitter feed that Welker is among the inactive players for Sunday's game at the Meadowlands.

Welker had previously been listed as questionable with a knee injury after hauling in 12 passes for 93 yards in New England's come-from-behind win against the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. This is a pretty big blow to the Patriots offense as Welker is a major contributor in the passing game, having caught a total of 223 passes the past two seasons.

In his absence, look for plenty of veteran Joey Galloway (zero catches in Week 1) and, perhaps, rookie Julian Edelman. Edelman, an undrafted free agent out of Kent State, caught six passes for 40 yards in the preseason and also had a 75-yard punt return.
