It's not the most embarrassing celebration-related injury, but Rob Johnson has now been added to The List (see below). The Mariners catcher twisted his ankle while jumping up and down following Ichiro's game-winning home run against the Yankees Friday night. And it was bad enough that Johnson missed Sunday's game.

"We have a video that says 'The most embarrassing moments,' and shows actually what happened," manager Don Wakamatsu told the Seattle Times' Larry Stone. "Yeah, he's taking some abuse on that. It wasn't twisted on someone else. He was jumping up and down, with no one around."

After the jump, more pointing and gawking at athletes who somehow managed to get hurt while celebrating, usually by their own doing.

Gus Frerotte, Redskins QB
Via the Washington Post, Nov. 1997: "[Frerotte] was given a CAT scan, the results of which were negative. Frerotte left the hospital midway through the fourth quarter wearing a neck brace. "I feel all right," he said, but declined further comment before getting into a waiting limousine that took him back to the stadium, accompanied by his wife, Ann, and 2-year-old daughter, Abigail."

Bill Gramatica, Cardinals kicker
Via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dec. 2001: "Did you catch Arizona kicker Bill Gramatica's "Lord of the Dance" routine Saturday against the Giants? Ended his season, it did. Tore a knee ligament, which forced the Cardinals to play the final three quarters without a true place-kicker. That's the real punchline: Gramatica was celebrating a successful, first-quarter field goal."

Desmond Howard, Lions returner
Via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Oct. 2002: "After Howard returned a 70-yard kickoff Sunday against New Orleans, he returned to the sideline, where defensive end Robert Porcher celebrated by slapping him upside the helmet. Howard dropped to the Ford Field turf, writhing in pain. ...

'It just so happened I was coming off a neck injury, so it wasn't the proper way to celebrate at the time," Howard said. "It hurt." ... "I just forgot all about his injury," Porcher said.

There's more, of course. Much, much more.
