Pacers Won't Have Hansbrough, Dunleavy For a While

Golden boy NCAA champ Tyler Hansbrough, a lottery pick of the Pacers, isn't getting off on the right foot -- err, shin -- in Indianapolis. A nagging shin injury Hansbrough dealt with at the start of his senior season at North Carolina has returned, and the rook has been deemed to be out "indefinitely." That means he'll miss at the least the start of training camp this week, and perhaps the preseason or the opening weeks of the regular season.

The news ain't good for Mike Dunleavy, either. Lil' Dun missed the majority of 2008-09, and he won't be ready on time for this season either. Indy coach Jim O'Brien told media Dunleavy won't likely be practicing until November, which puts the forward on schedule to miss at least a half-dozen regular season games.

The injuries have opened up an opportunity for other players, though. Like Rod Benson.

Benson, a D-League and French league vet, is a FanHouse favorite. Too Much writes for his own site, Yahoo's NBA blog Ball Don't Lie, and he even released a song calling out various beloved bloggers. Benson also happens to be a pretty darned good player, and he's been one of the most curious cases in terms of D-League stars not getting called up to the Bigs.

There's been a ton of speculation that Benson's writing hasn't helped him land a job on an NBA bench. Benson is hilarious, and as a minor league basketball player, a lot of his jokes are about basketball ... and basketball players ... and basketball coaches. Benson himself has openly wondered if his writing was preventing a contract.

That's why it's particularly curious -- and disheartening, to be honest -- that Benson has basically scrubbed his online presence. He told his Twitter followers on Friday he won't be tweeting or blogging for a while, and his old content on his website has been pulled. Either Benson decided to find out if it's his talent or writing keeping him for getting a job, or the Pacers requested the removal of the content. For fans of the Boom Tho movement, either answer is bad news.

But if it gets Benson into The Association, maybe it'll be worth it. It looks like Indiana is going to need help, and I think Rod can provide it.
