Stan Van GundyORLANDO -- The Orlando Magic will announce soon that that they have exercised the option year on coach Stan Van Gundy's original contract, putting him on the payroll at least through the 2010-11 season.

Van Gundy this season would have been going into the final guaranteed year on his original contract, signed before the 2007-08 season.

General manager Otis Smith confirmed Monday at the team's media day that they have guaranteed the contract through next season.

The announcement was no surprise. Van Gundy, in his first two seasons with the Magic, has compiled a 111-53 record, including a trip to the NBA Finals last spring when they lost to the Lakers.

The Magic are going into this season as one of three favorites from the Eastern Conference, joining the Celtics and Cavaliers. They have changed their roster significantly by adding Vince Carter, Brandon Bass and Matt Barnes.

Van Gundy has a career NBA record of 223-126 (.639). He was the third fastest active coach to reach the 200-victory plateau.

Under his coaching, the Magic finished with their two best road records (27-14 and 27-14) in franchise history.
