Brandan Wright Faces Another Hurdle: Shoulder Surgery

The NBA career of forward Brandan Wright has not gone according to plan. The UNC product, acquired by Golden Sate as a lottery pick during the 2007 draft in exchange for Jason Richardson, has played rarely for the Warriors, stuck outside Don Nelson's infamous tunnel vision.

His 2009-10 season has another more immediate challenge now: Yahoo!'s Marc Spears reports that a shoulder injury suffered during Friday's practice could put Wright under the knife, and off the court for up to six months.

Spears reports that Wright was injured when a training camp defender raked the forward's arm on a shot attempt. Nelson is quoted as being dire (but not specific) about the severity of the malady, saying that "it's quite a loss for us." Nelson also said -- and take this for what it's worth, as Nellie changes his mind like his socks -- that Wright had been one of the team's best camp performers, outpacing Anthony Randolph, the GSW wunderkind power forward who played in front of Wright much of last season.

If Wright does miss the majority of the season as proposed, it'd be a devastating setback for the player. Wright produced well at UNC and brought with him to the league legitimate NBA length and athleticism. While Wright certainly wasn't expected to be an immediate NBA force (most owing to his youth and slight frame), no one thought he'd be a four-year project player. But missing six months would effectively erase this season, which means the first chance Wright would get would be in his fourth year. Hmph.

Let's hope the fear is overblown and Wright escapes with a minor injury instead of surgery and months of rehab. Randolph and Monta Ellis are the reasons to watch Golden State, but Wright certainly needs a chance to insert himself in the conversation.
