Isaac RedmanDuring the preseason, the Steelers' best short-yardage back was undoubtedly Isaac Redman.

But since Redman isn't a good special teams player, doesn't know how to play fullback and isn't in the best of shape, he was let go in the final cutdown to the 53-man roster.

Now thanks to an injury to Willie Parker, he's back on the roster and will likely get another chance to prove that he's the answer to the Steelers' dire need for a back who can turn a third-and-1 into first-and-10.

The Steelers have run the ball on third-and-1 four times this year. The only time they converted the first down came when Ben Roethlisberger kept the ball on a sneak. Willie Parker is 0-for-2 on third-and-1s while Mewelde Moore is 0-for-1.

Redman should be able to improve that percentage. During the preseason he showed the ability to drive his legs and move the pile. If he's successful at filling the short-yardage role however, Pittsburgh will be faced with a big decision once Willie Parker's turf toe heals. Between Parker, Rashard Mendenhall and Moore, Pittsbugh has three tailbacks it normally dresses (and returner Stefan Logan can even fill the job in a pinch). It's very hard to dress four tailbacks on the 46-man active roster, which means either Redman would be back on the bench (or the practice squad) or the Steelers would have to bench one of their other three tailbacks to keep Redman as the short-yardage back.

But that would be a good problem for Steelers fans -- for now we just need to see if Redman can fill the role.
