And so ends the fairy tale relationship that most of us thought would last forever. That's right, 15 months after getting hitched, 50-somethings Greg Norman and Chris Evert have separated. The announcement came Friday, days before Norman was to captain the International side in the President's Cup. I can't imagine it'll have any effect on the team event, and if anything, maybe it'll take some of the focus off Adam Scott, who hasn't played well in oh, I don't know, 15 months.
Good news, though: Norman and Evert part on good terms. Via the Associated Press:
In a statement, the couple said only, "We will remain friends and supportive of one another's family." The statement said they requested privacy for them and their families. In a shocking turn of events, the tabloids have commenced with the speculating.
Norman's spokesman, Bart Collins, said the two-time British Open champion would not comment beyond the statement. Norman's first press conference at the Presidents Cup is Tuesday morning at Harding Park.
According to the Daily Mirror, the couple split "because neither wanted to move out of their own home. ... A friend said: 'Chris hated the idea of living in the same place Greg shared with Laura, his wife of 25 years.'"
And the Daily Telegraph has this: "...Norman's former mother-in-law, Laura Andrassy Sr ... said the golfer's two adult children -- Morgan and Greg, to whom he was devoted -- did not get on with Evert, which contributed to the split."
Upside: this marriage won't cost Norman $100 million.
