Junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo of Coachella, Calif., has moved his training camp from his hometown to that of his promoter, Gary Shaw, in Wayne, N.J., in preparation for his Nov. 7 match-up opposite undefeated Harry Joe Yorgey of Bridgeport, Pa.Shaw is in Nottingham, England, where he will watch another of his prospects, super middleweight (168) Andre Dirrell (18-0, 13 KOs), of Flint, Mich., take on WBC champion Carl Froch (25-0, 20 KOs) at the Trent FM Arena on Saturday night on Showtime.
A 154-pound native of Mexicali, Mexico, Angulo's 12-round fight for the WBO Inter-Continental crown will take place at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
"I don't know of any other promoter who would do this for his fighter," said Angulo. "Gary knows this fight means everything to me, and I didn't want to leave anything to chance.
"Gary was kind enough to house my team to allow me to train early on the east coast. Harry Joe Yorgey is standing between me and a shot at a world title. On Nov. 7, Yorgey won't be standing at all when we meet in Hartford."
Angulo-Yorgey will take place on HBO on the undercard of the main event, featuring undefeated two-time light heavyweight (175) titlist Chad Dawson (28-0, 17 KOs), of New Haven, Conn., and former world champion Glen Johnson (49-12-2, 33 KOs) of Miami for Dawson's IBO and the WBC interim light heavyweight titles.
Angulo will participate in an open media workout on Monday at Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn, N.Y., starting at noon.
In August, the 27-year-old Angulo scored his 13th knockout to improve to 16-1 when he blasted out Gabriel Rosado in two rounds. The victory helped Angulo to rebound from May's 12-round, unanimous decision loss to former welterweight world champion Kermit Cintron of Houston.
In March, Yorgey scored his 10th knockout to improve to 22-0-1, when he came up with a ninth-round stoppage over previously unbeaten Ronald Hearns of Southfield, Mich.
"Angulo wanted to get acclimated to the climate and the time difference early, so I invited his team to stay with me for this phase of training camp. I for one have benefited from this because I'm with him almost 24-7 when I'm in. And it's kept me on a dietary straight and narrow," Shaw said.
"In fact, the police stopped by the house yesterday because my local Dunkin' Donuts filed a missing persons report. Seriously, it's just good business.
"Why wouldn't I do everything I could to help my fighter win? It was a no-brainer, plus it's been a lot of fun. My family has really enjoyed having them there, and it's made Angulo and me a little bit closer."
