Week 7 NFL Picks: Brett's Boys Due For A Loss

There aren't normally this many unbeaten teams left after six weeks of the season -- the number right now is four, a "modern'' record. (which means nobody really knows who did what back in the days of the Canton Bulldogs and Providence Steamrollers.)

There might be only one after this week: Denver, which isn't playing. Although, to get serious, does anyone really expect the Rams to beat the Colts? And we'll get to the Saints later.

But it's time for the Vikings to lose (yes, I've said that before.) If not for Brett Favre and Greg Lewis, they would have lost to San Francisco. If not for Steve Hauschka, the Raven's field-goal kicker, they would have lost last week to Baltimore.

This week's game is at Pittsburgh -- FINALLY, the Vikings play a good team on the road. The Steelers are favored by either four or four-and-a-half points, more than the three points they get for home field. Which means that people think the Steelers are simply a better team. (Super Bowl winners die hard).

There's some sense to that.

The Vikings' three road games have been at Cleveland, Detroit and St. Louis, who have two wins among them this season. Their home games are against San Francisco, Green Bay and Baltimore. As noted, they probably should have lost two of them.

It doesn't mean they'll lose again. But they're not the 2007 Patriots and the law of averages says ...

Just as the Saints had a week off to prepare for the Giants in last week's battle of the unbeatens, the Dolphins had their bye week before this game. No, Miami's secondary isn't much good, but the Dolphins do have the ability to control the clock with their wildcat -- that's how they almost beat the Colts.

Tom Coughlin doesn't like to lose two in a row. But how hard the wind is blowing Sunday night at the Meadowlands may be more important than Kurt Warner, his receivers and the still rather disheveled New York secondary.

If you're like me and don't remember these teams EVER playing, here's the facts: they've met eight times and Cincy actually leads 5-3, winning 24-7 in Chicago in 2005. The Bengals don't have Antwan Odom. They do have a revenge-minded Cedric Benson against his old team.
