Paul Williams, a two-time welterweight and one-time junior middlweight champion, will likely face WBC champion Sergio Martinez on Dec. 5 in Atlantic City, his promoter, Dan Goossen, said Friday.Goossen is pursuing Martinez (44-1, 24 KOs) for the 154-pound clash instead of WBO champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (36-0, 22 KOs), whom he was also considering.
"I would say that we're working toward trying to finalize Martinez. The site, I don't have yet," said Goossen of a man who battled former world welterweight champion Kermit Cintron to a 12-round draw in their clash for the WBC's interim title in February.
Williams 37-1, 27 KOs) was forced to find another opponent when his original rival, WBO and WBC middleweight champion, Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 31 KOs), canceled their bout scheduled for the same date as a result of a staph infection on the knuckle of his left forefinger.
"Despite what I've been reading, we're still working toward finalizing everything with the site," said Goossen. "Certainly, I've been discussing things with Atlantic City. we're hoping to have that set no later than Monday, hopefully, maybe by this weekend."
Martinez has gone 28-0-1 with 18 knockouts since losing by seventh-round knockout in February 2000 to Antonio Margarito, who lost by 12-round unanimous decision to Williams in July 2007.
Also to be featured on the card is heavyweight contender Cris Arreola (27-1, 24 KOs), who is coming off of a Sept. 26, 10th-round knockout loss to WBA champion Vitali Klitschko (38-2, 37 KOs).
Goossen said that he has not yet secured an opponent for Arreola, adding, "Right now, we're concentrating on Williams."
