Curb Your Enthusiasm Features Derek Jeter Sabermetric Debate
When Larry David was producing Seinfeld, he once had Derek Jeter (above, along with George Costanza and Bernie Williams) on the show. Apparently he liked Jeter a lot, because on Sunday night's Curb Your Enthusiasm, a sabermetric debate about Jeter's merits as a player was a central part of the plot -- with Larry insisting that Jeter's clutch hitting more than made up for any statistical failings as a fielder.
On the show, a conversation between Larry and a stonemason who was engraving his mother's tombstone somehow devolved into this argument:
Stonemason: "Derek Jeter is the most overrated player in baseball."
Larry: "What did you say?"
Stonemason: "I can't stand Derek Jeter. You know he's the worst defensive shortstop in baseball, statistically?"
Larry: "Bulls**t. He's a great clutch hitter, he's a great clutch player."
Stonemason: "There's no way he deserves the money he's making."
The sabermetrically inclined site fangraphs.com helpfully informs us that it's true Jeter is one of the worst fielding shortstops in baseball, but that Jeter is a good enough overall player that he's not, contrary to what the stonemason thinks, overpaid.
So it turns out that Larry and the stonemason were both right. But this is Larry David we're talking about, so it's fair to say they didn't just agree to disagree.
