Designed by renowned American architect Robert A.M. Stern, who is the dean of the Yale School of Architecture, the library will reside on the Dallas campus of Southern Methodist University.
At SMU on Wednesday, former first lady Laura Bush, Stern and the project's landscape architect, Matthew Urbanski, debuted the plans for what will be known as the George W. Bush Presidential Center.
The building and grounds, which are meant to blend in with the Georgian-style structures on the SMU campus, will be constructed so as to achieve a LEED platinum certification, the highest level "green" rating possible. The new library will be constructed of 20 percent recycled materials and will use a variety of "locally sourced building materials," according to a press release.
An outdoor "Texas Rose Garden" is meant to evoke the one located at the White House, and a replica of the Oval Office is planned. Exhibits will showcase the highlights of the 43rd president's time in office, including the attacks of 9/11, as well as the invasion of Iraq. The building will also include a 364-seat auditorium.
"I applaud the work of Robert Stern and Michael Van Valkenburgh in designing a building and landscape that will capture the dignity of the office of the presidency, while at the same time being warm and welcoming to visitors," the former president said in a statement. "Laura and I are thrilled with the plans."
Groundbreaking for the project is hoped to begin within a year, the university said. So far, the Bush Foundation has raised approximately $200 million of the $300 million it is hoping to have by the time construction starts.
