We're trying something different to replace the old Newsmakers in the NHL posts. Hopefully you'll like it. Each weekday we'll take a look at one positive performance from the previous night (a plus), and one negative performance from the previous night (a minus). It's the plus/minus.Tell us what you think at nhlfanhouse@gmail.com.Plus Of The Day: Brian Elliott, Ottawa Senators
Now that Pascal Leclaire is out of the Ottawa lineup for the short-term with a broken cheek bone, Brian Elliott, a former ninth-round pick in 2003, is going to be handling the No. 1 duties in the crease. On Thursday, he stopped 32 of 33 shots in the Senators' 2-1 win against Columbus, improving his record to 4-2 on the season.
After Kristian Huselius gave the Jackets a 1-0 lead late in the first period, Senators forward Jason Spezza responded less than a minute later with his second goal of the season. Nick Foligno scored the game-winner with less than seven minutes to play in regulation, capitalizing on a Jan Hejda hooking penalty. The loss ends a difficult five-game road trip for Columbus that saw it lose four consecutive games.
The Senators, meanwhile, have won five of their past six.
Minus Of The Day: Dustin Brown, Los Angeles Kings
The Kings lost for the sixth time in their past 10 games, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Vancouver Canucks. Dustin Brown recorded seven shots on goal in 20 minutes of ice-time during the loss, but was on the ice for all four Vancouver goals, finishing the game as a minus-four, by far his worst single-game mark of the season. The 25-year-old winger has been slumping as of late on the score sheet, failing to score a goal in nine straight, and recording just three assists during his current drought.
