Joe Thornton is off to quite a start for the San Jose Sharks this season, entering Tuesday's game against Ottawa tied with the Rangers' Marian Gaborik for the league lead with 37 points. He's also, once again, leading the league in assists (30, five more than Dallas' Brad Richards), and is on a pace that could put him among some legendary company when all is said and done.
Entering this season, Thornton was one of only five players in NHL history to record two 90-assist seasons, reaching the mark during the 2005-06 (96 assists) and 2006-07 campaigns (92 assists). The other players in that group are Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr, and Adam Oates. Pat Lafontaine, Peter Stastny, Paul Coffey, Doug Gilmour, Steve Yzerman and Ron Francis accomplished it once.
That group is impressive enough, but when you consider that Thornton could threaten to hit the 90-assist mark for a third time, it becomes even more amazing.
The only players with three 90-assist seasons? Gretzky (13 times) and Lemieux (five times). Granted, Thornton still has to actually do it for a third time before he can be included in this group, but he appears to at least have a fighting chance.
It would certainly take an incredible effort to maintain that pace, but the one thing he has going for him is that he's currently playing with the best winger he's ever had at his side in former Senator, and two-time 50-goal scorer, Dany Heatley. Thornton has assisted on 10 of Heatley's 18 goals so far.
