UCF has accepted a bid to play in the St. Petersburg Bowl and SMU will play in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, school sources told FanHouse. The Knights (8-4) finished second in Conference USA's East Division with a 6-2 league record. UCF will play a Big East team, which is expected to be either Rutgers (8-3) or UConn (6-5). The St. Pete Bowl is Dec. 19 at 8 p.m. at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.
After starting 3-3, the Knights won five of their final six games. UCF's only loss was 35-3 at No. 2 Texas.
This will be only UCF's third bowl appearance in school history - and all under Coach George O'Leary. The Knights lost the 2005 Hawaii Bowl to Nevada and the 2007 Liberty Bowl to Mississippi State.
SMU (7-5, 6-2) tied for the C-USA West Division title with Houston, but the Cougars advanced to the C-USA title game based on their 38-15 victory against the Mustangs.
The Mustangs also closed strong, winning four of their last five.
This will be SMU's first bowl bid since playing in Hawaii in the 1984 Aloha Bowl. The Mustangs were given the NCAA's Death Penalty and didn't field a team in 1987 and 1988 before resuming in 1989.
This season is only SMU's second winning season since the Death Penalty. Last year in June Jones' debut season, the Mustangs went 1-11.
The Sheraton Hawaii Bowl is Dec. 24 at 8 p.m. SMU will face a team from the Western Athletic Conference. If Hawaii (6-5) defeats Wisconsin Saturday, Jones would play his former school. If Hawaii loses to Wisconsin, SMU's opponent would be either Nevada (8-4) or Fresno State (7-4).
