We get to know NHL players with some quick questions. Today's subject: Islanders all-star defenseman Mark Streit, who was born and raised in Switzerland.

What is your first hockey memory?

Skating outside back home in Bern, Switzerland and on vacation outside our cottage in the Bernese Alps. Playing a game I love so much with my friends, with the mountains in the background ... paradise. Heaven.

What's your favorite thing about playing in the NHL?

The pre-game lunch (laughing). No, I'm just kidding, although it's pretty good. Growing up in Switzerland, it was my dream to play in all the big cities and in all the beautiful rinks around the NHL. That dream has come true. I love the games -- all of them. I love travelling with our team. I love playing against the best players in the world. I'm very fortunate to have this job.

What's the toughest aspect of life in the NHL?

Just being far away from home. That's the only sacrifice -- being away from my family. But I have absolutely no complaints. Once I'm here, I enjoy the American way of life. I also live close to New York, which to me is the greatest city in the world.

Do you have any game-day rituals?

I'm kind of superstitious, but I don't have any rituals that you'd find crazy or funny. Just on game days, I have my set pattern. I'm up at eight in the morning, I have my breakfast at the same time, leave for the pre-game skate at the same time. I don't change that pattern.

If you could hit one opponent with a clean, hard check, who would it be?

Sean Avery.

Any particular reason?

No.

If you could be one of your teammates, who would it be?

Dwayne Roloson, Martin Biron or Rick DiPietro. I always thought it would be good for a defenseman to put on the pads for one game and see what life is like back there in the goal.
