Seahawks president and general manager Tim Ruskell announced his resignation Thursday, a move that may set the table for former Seattle coach Mike Holmgren to return to the franchise."Obviously there's great sadness today but I will leave here with great memories of this place and the people. It's been the people for me," Ruskell said at a press conference.
Ruston Webster, Seattle's vice president of player personnel, will assume the general manager position on an interim basis.
Ruskell took over his posts in Seattle prior to the 2005 season. The Seahawks finished his first year 13-3 and advanced all the way to Super Bowl XL before losing to the Steelers. They followed that up with two more NFC West division titles in 2006 and '07, but have fallen well short of that level of success lately -- Seattle finished 4-12 last season and currently sits 4-7 in 2009.
According to the Seattle Times' Danny O'Neill, Ruskell, who is in the final year of a five-year contract, pushed the organization for an extension or other resolution to his uncertain future. With no answer provided, he opted to step down with five games left in the regular season.
Holmgren's name will immediately enter into the mix as a possible replacement for Ruskell. Holmgren coached the Seahawks from 1999-2008 -- he took 2009 off, while Jim Mora took over as Seattle's head coach.
And while the 61-year-old Holmgren would not return to Seattle's sideline, he might be a perfect fit in the front office. Holmgren served as head coach/general manager from 1999-2003 before the franchise removed his GM title.
