The always-fascinating NHL Draft Traveling Road Show is taking its act to Los Angeles on the weekend of June 25-26, 2010. This is the first time Los Angeles is hosting the NHL Draft, and it's doubtful you'll hear many complaints among league executives.

The National Hockey League is the lone sports league in which all of its teams bring their staffs to the draft site, instead of having war rooms at home and just a few people to answer the phone on the draft floor. Although there is a personnel limit of 21 at each team draft table, NHL franchises typically dispatch anywhere from 30 to 50 staffers on draft week.

Although the proceedings do not begin until Friday night with the first round, many team scouts, general managers and other front office types head to the draft site as early as Monday. If you're going to be away for a week after the marathon NHL season, let's face it -- you could do a lot worse than Los Angeles.

"This is a very exciting and special announcement," said Kings Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille, who was part of a contingent that lobbied the league to bring the draft to Los Angeles.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman cited the growth of youth hockey in California, which began in earnest when Wayne Gretzky was acquired by the Kings. "Local youth programs are producing an increasing number of elite players," said Bettman.

According to the NHL, 23 players have been drafted from the state of California since 2001, including nine in the last three draft years. Only five states in the U.S. have had more: Minnesota, Massachusetts, New York, Michigan and Illinois.

Round 1 of the draft -- held at the Staples Center, home of the Kings -- will begin at 7:00 PM ET on Friday, June 25. Rounds 2-7 begin the next day at 1:00 PM ET.
