Thrasher Magazine announced its 2009 "SOTY" (Skater of the Year) winner -- generally regarded to be the most prestigious annual award in skateboarding -- and the winner was revealed to be talented street skater Chris Cole. The award, announced by Thrasher editor Jake Phelps via a phone call with Cole, will likely be received with little controversy in the skateboarding community, as Cole had a banner year by skate standards. Cole dominated everything from major events -- he won the 2009 Dew Tour as well as the 2009 Maloof Money Cup, two of the biggest pro street contests of the year -- to backyard jams, as evidenced by his jaw-dropping performance at the Back to the 'Berg contest (organized, coincidentally, by Thrasher), as well as his victory at the Battle at the Berrics 2 (arguably his finest moment of the year).
In fact, the only thing that Cole didn't complete in 2009 was a banner video part, which is very often a criteria for being named SOTY.
Cole also won the award in 2005, making him just the second repeat winner in the history of the event. (Danny Way won the award in 1991 and 2004.)
When asked by Phelps how he felt to be named the 2009 SOTY, Cole replied, "Dude, I'm just stoked out of my face."
"Stoked out of my face?" answered Phelps.
"Out of my face," Cole joked back.
