By this time last season, the NBA was well on its way toward a record seven in-season coaching changes. The firing squad has slowed down in 2009, with only two coaches (Byron Scott and Lawrence Frank) meeting their demise. But coaches are still getting damaged ... in other ways.

Blazers boss Nate McMillan, already dealing with enough problems with his team, tore his Achilles tendon while filling in during a practice scrimmage. The Oregonian reports that McMillan will coach tonight's game but skip an upcoming four-game road trip in order to recover from surgery, currently scheduled for Monday. Dean Demopoulos will take McMillan's seat.

The other ailing head coach -- Golden State's Don Nelson -- had been told to skip Friday's practice and Saturday's game against Orlando. Nelson missed five games due to pneumonia before returning to the sidelines Thursday in a loss to Houston. Nelson reported having two dizzy spells during the game, at which point his boss (and friend) Larry Riley told him to skip work until Dec. 15, when the Warriors will have completed an upcoming five-game road trip.

Instead, according to Marcus Thompson III of the Contra Costa Times, Nelson showed up early to practice Friday after staying up until 3 AM as his illness continues to take its toll. And Nelson will coach tonight against the Magic. The coaching staff isn't the only part of the team short-handed, though, as Anthony Morrow will miss the Orlando game due to a death in the family. Anthony Randolph is also out with his sprained ankle.
