Houston NuttAn unexpected surprise has apparently fallen the lap of Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins.

According to radio station KABZ-FM in Arkansas, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt has expressed interest the Kansas Jayhawks job vacated by embattled coach Mark Mangino last Thursday. Perkins is also interested in talking with Nutt, who is preparing the Mississippi Rebels to play in the Cotton Bowl, according to sources familiar with both sides.

But Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone said through the athletic department's sports information office that Kansas has not contacted him for permission to speak with Nutt.

It had seemed that University of Buffalo coach Turner Gill might be the favorite after interviewing with Perkins on Sunday. But Nutt's surprising interest in the Jayhawks job perhaps changes things drastically.

Nutt has spent the last 12 years coaching in the SEC (10 years at Arkansas and the last two years at Ole Miss) and has a great reputation as a recruiter and coach. He has compiled a 95-56 overall and 41-45 SEC record during his time at Arkansas and Ole Miss.

The natural question is why would Nutt be interested in the Kansas job over staying at Ole Miss. Speculation is Nutt realizes how tough the SEC West will continue to be with Nick Saban having Alabama rolling and LSU continues to be an elite program. The Big 12 North is a much easier division to win with no nationally dominant programs at this point.

Nutt has quickly turned the Rebels around, taking them to back-to-back Cotton Bowls. Ole Miss finished 8-4 overall and 4-4 during the regular season.

Nutt was awarded an extension last year that takes him through 2012 and pays him approximately $2.5 million annually after rumors surfaced he had interest in the Auburn job.
