The AP reports that "thrill-seekers from as far away as South Africa" are on hand to witness the spectacle, and the poor sap in the video below -- an experienced surfer -- gives the play-by-play of how his "ankle separated from his tibia and fibula so it was just flopping" as he attempted to brave the surf.
"According to state officials the surf grew so large that a few beaches on Oahu and Maui were closed because the lifeguards feared inexperienced sightseers could drown."
Well, if the pro surfer that looks like Corbin Bernsen doesn't stand a chance, "inexperienced sightseers" are as good as dead. At the risk of letting Darwinism do its thing, I suppose closing beaches is in the public's best interest. No matter how much they might have it coming.
