It's starting to look as though the story behind the movie version of Michael Lewis' book Moneyball could end up being more interesting than the movie itself. The movie is based on Lewis' book about Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane and his rebuilding of the Athletics organization using statistical data. The movie was originally supposed to be directed by Steven Soderbergh and star Brad Pitt as Billy Beane, but it was pulled by Sony Pictures during the summer because the studio feared it wouldn't play as well internationally as it would with baseball nerds across the United States. Well, it seems they've gotten over those fears because the movie has a new director and is back on track to getting finished.
Steven Soderbergh has been replaced by Bennett Miller, the Oscar-nominated director of Capote, according to Variety. The trade announcement confirms an earlier scoop by The Playlist that suggested Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) was also considered for the job.
Whether or not Brad Pitt is still in line to play Beane is one of a few questions remaining about the movie's production. The original script has been re-written a few times by Soderbergh and Aaron Sorkin, and which script will be used for Miller's version of the film is unknown.
So whether that reported Billy Beane sex scene will make its way into the film is up in the air at this point.
Also, considering it's a baseball movie you figure Kevin Costner is going to get involved in it somehow before everything is all said and done.
