Minnesota Coach's Apparent Interest in Kansas Job Irks His AD

It's not clear whether or not Minnesota Gophers Tim Brewster is a serious contender for the Kansas job, but from the sounds of the Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi he might need to be.

Maturi didn't sound all too pleased upon learning this week his head football coach is a candidate for the Kansas Jayhawks job. He went as far as Tuesday to acknowledge to the St. Paul Pioneer-Press that his Brewster could leave for Kansas and that he "can't guarantee" Brewster will return next season.

"There are rumors that he's going to Kansas, so I don't know," Maturi said to the Pioneer-Press. "What can I say? So I can't guarantee it, no. I can't guarantee the decisions of other people."

Brewster has been the latest surprise name as KU athletic director Lew Perkins looks for a replacement for Mark Mangino. On Monday, word leaked of a mutual interest between Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt and Kansas, but Nutt released a statement Tuesday saying he was not interested in leaving the Rebels.

Perkins has sought permission to speak with Buffalo coach Turner Gill and the two have apparently met, but it's unclear where Gill ranks. There is also still a strong belief Perkins has interest in UConn coach Randy Edsall, whom Perkins hired to Huskies.

But in the meantime, the news Tuesday centered on Brewster. He seems a bit of a reach because his success at Minnesota so far hasn't been overwhelming. He has guided the Minnesota Golden Gophers to back-to-back Insight Bowl bids, losing last year to Mangino's Jayhawks, 42-21 and facing Iowa State this year.

Apparently Brewster, who is 14-23 in three seasons at Minnesota, has caused his athletic director to lose some patience with him by not being up front and following protocol. As a courtesy, college athletics normally ask permission to speak with a coach under contract with a school, but there is no rule to that effect as it is in the NFL.

"I'm smart enough to know that [Brewster's] not going to tell me; nor is the athletic director at Kansas going to tell me until it's a done deal," Brewster told the St. Paul newspaper. "I chatted with [Brewster] about it very, very briefly. I told him I'm getting tired of all of these Kansas calls. That's kind of been my conversations with him. I know how the game is played. I know how it is. I'm respectful of that. I'm not going to believe the rumors until they're fact. I'm not going to knee-jerk react one way or the other because of it."
