Jonathan Babineaux, a starting defensive tackle for the Falcons, was arrested late Thursday night and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Police found Babineaux in possession of nearly 1 1/2 ounces of marijuana, according to the Associated Press.Babineaux was released from Gwinnett County jail in Lawrenceville, Ga., early Friday morning on $8,300 bond.
The Falcons released a statement Friday regarding the matter: "We are aware of the situation concerning Jonathan Babineaux and are in the process of gathering information. Because this is a legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time."
Babineaux, 28, has started 34 consecutive games for the Falcons, dating back to 2007. In 12 games this season, he has five sacks, which tie him for most on the team, and 33 tackles.
Babineaux was arrested once before in Gwinnett County, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In 2007, Babineaux was charged with killing his girlfriend's dog -- an autopsy ruled that the pitbull-mix died of blunt force trauma to the head -- but the case was dismissed nine months later. Babineaux's lawyer said that his client was trying to protect his daughter when the dog began behaving aggressively.
Atlanta is expected to let Babineaux play Sunday against New Orleans. The 6-6 Falcons have lost three of their last four games to fall out of playoff position in the NFC.
