Juan Diaz vs. Paulie Malignaggi: Live Round-by-Round Updates

Paulie MalignaggiFanHouse has a Juan Diaz vs. Paulie Malignaggi live blog for the main event as well as undercard updates for their 12-round, HBO-televised title bout.

The HBO broadcast begins at 10:30 p.m. ET, with the main event beginning at approximately 11:20, ET.

Diaz is 35-2, with 17 knockouts, and Malignaggi is 26-3, with five KOs: Refresh this page often for minute-by-minute updates.


Round 1: Malignaggi comes forward behind his jab, Diaz's hands are high around his head. Diaz jabs his way in, but Malignaggi clinches. Malignaggi looks bigger. Malingnaggi's movement is troubling Diaz, who is backing up. The jab of Malignaggi is extremely effective. Malignaggi follows two jabs with an overhand right. The crowd chants Malignaggi's first name. Malignaggi's round, 10-9.

Round 2: It's more of the same in the second round, as Malignaggi continues to maintain his distance. Diaz tries to trap Malignaggi in a corner, but he escapes. Diaz flails and misses. Malignaggi won't let him cut off the ring. A left glances by Diaz, but Malignaggi fires two jabs in return. Nice upperbody movement by Malignaggi. Malignaggi's hands are down, having no problem eluding Diaz, getting in and out. Diaz is cut on the left eye, and takes a nice combination. Malignaggi stands and fires a four-punch combination. Diaz's jabs fall short. Malignaggi's round, 10-9.

Round 3: Diaz closed the gap early and got in two jabs. But Malignaggi creates distance again. Diaz closes but Malignaggi clinches. Three hooks and an uppercut by Diaz land. Nice sequence. Malignaggi mugs. Malignaggi goes back to boxing. Malignaggi calms down and settles back into his rhythm. Malignaggi fires a nice left, but misses on an ensuing combination. Malignaggi is back to jabbing, and appears to have doubled Diaz's punch out-put for the round. Diaz's scores with a right, but the round goes to Malignaggi. Malignaggi's round, 10-9.

Round 4: The up-jab and the straight right of Malignaggi are very effective so far, and make themselves apparent early, yet again. Malignaggi is firing and spinning off well, as Diaz follows. Diaz is doubling up on his jab, but isn't landing as effectively as his taller opponent. Malignaggi dips a left to the body, and smother's Diaz's attack with a clinch. Malignaggi is simply having a field day from a distance, teeing off with his overhand right. Malignaggi's round, 10-9.

Round 5: Diaz enjoys an early, spirited moment in a neutral corner where he lands effectively. Malignaggi stands his ground and engages with Diaz, who still doesn't out-work the taller man. Back to boxing, Malignaggi jabs again. Diaz appears to be closing the distance, but then, Malignaggi creates distance again. Diaz is warned to keep his punches up. Diaz lands three hooks to the body and a right to the body. Malignaggi dances away. Malignaggi misses a three-punch combination. Diaz's round, 10-9.

Round 6: Malignaggi stands in to start. He circles, but trades jabs with Diaz. A Diaz comes back with two body shots and a right hand to the head. Malignaggi lands an overhand right. Malignaggi lands a right uppercut. Malignaggi drives a right to the head. Malignaggi is back to jabbing. Diaz hooks to the head. Malignaggi hurts Diaz with a right hand uppercut to the head and fires about six punches. Malignaggi lets him off the hook. Malignaggi's round, 10-9.

Round 7: Malignaggi appears to be in complete control. Fighting tall, Malignaggi circles and jab and fires right hands. Diaz isn't pressuring effectively. Malignaggi stands in, jabbing to the body and head, lightly. Malignaggi pockets another, easy round. Malignaggi's round, 10-9.

Round 8: Malignaggi simply is landing cleanly until being hit low during an exchange. Malignaggi takes a brief brake. They trade jabs, and when Diaz closes, Malignaggi clinches. Malignaggi isn't made to pay for standing in until Diaz out-works him along the ropes, landing a couple of overhand rights. But in the center of the ring, Malignaggi lands a crisp overhand right during an exchange and moves away. Diaz's round, 10-9.

Round 9: Malignaggi's consistent movement is the story in the fight. Diaz lands occasionally, but can't sustain his pressure. A nice up-jab lands by Diaz. Diaz's left eye is opening more, a testament to Malignaggi's jab. Malignaggi's corner tells him, "This is easy work," and it is. Malignaggi's round, 10-9.

Round 10: Malignaggi stops Diaz in his tracks with an early jab. Story of the fight. Diaz enjoys only fleeting moments of contact when Malignaggi stands inside and trades. Diaz is short with an overhand right. Malignaggi slaps with a right hand. Diaz gets two, nice jabs in. Malignaggi is credited with a knock-down, even as his right hand only connected with Diaz's gloves on the left side of his head. Diaz's right glove touches the canvas. Bad call, and Diaz isn't hurt, but he has no fire. Malignaggi's round, 10-8.

Round 11: Diaz lands a left hand early. Diaz doubles up on a left hand. Nice start to the round for him, but too late in the fight. Malignaggi goes back to jabbing and stiffs Diaz twice. A third time and a fourth. Diaz snaps back Malignaggi's head with a right. Malignaggi gets off two jabs to one for Diaz. Malignaggi picks off two hooks from Diaz. Malignaggi's round, 10-9.

Round 12: Malignaggi has landed 32 more punches coming into this round than Diaz. The crowd is screaming for both fighters. Diaz misses with a wild right and then a left. Malignaggi digs two right uppercuts and a follow-up left and dances away. Diaz fires and lands a hard, overhand right. Diaz quadruples up on his left hook all to the head. Diaz lands a right to the head. Malignaggi gets out-worked on the inside. Diaz's name is being chanted. Diaz doubles up on his jab. Four soft jabs by Malignaggi. Diaz's round, 10-9

Victor Ortiz (25-2-1, 20 knockouts), Oxnard, Calif., by sixth round knockout over Antonio Diaz (46-6-1, 29 KOs), Coachella, Calif., as Diaz's corner stops the fight after the sixth round due to a cut junior welterweight (140 pounds) bout.

Round 1: The southpaw Ortiz was patient over the first round, basically jabbing and biding his time out of his southpaw stance. No real action except for Ortiz's patience. Seems a little tight, simply trying to remain busy. Ortiz's round, 10-9.

Round 2: In the second round, Ortiz battered Diaz with a nice combination during the middle of the round, right-left-right. Hands held high around his head, Ortiz searched for openings and simply bided his time, delivering crisp punches as Diaz tried to come in unsuccessfully. Diaz seems a willing dance partner. Ortiz's round, 10-9.

Round 3: Told to continue relaxing through between rounds, Ortiz does just that. Ortiz, however, seems to be sitting down on his punches. Ortiz nails Diaz to the canvas with a nice, counter-left hand. Diaz is up at the count of eight, but Ortiz fires away. Diaz, holding on, takes punishment down the stretch but gets through the round. Ortiz's round, 10-8.

Round 4: Diaz can't get into a rhythm, while the younger fighter appears to be settling in. Ortiz could probably force the issue more, but seems to be concentrating on boxing. Diaz lands a right to the chin, but Ortiz follows up his jab with movement and counters. Ortiz's jab and speed are too much for Diaz, who, nevertheless, hangs in. Ortiz's round, 10-9.

Round 5: Ortiz continues to give ground and provide movement, delivering a nice, double-left hook to the head and body. Hands held high around his head and ears, Diaz delivers a nice counter. Ortiz won't stay still, moving side to side against the older man and firing with either hand effectively, but now devastatingly. Diaz has a cut along his left eye Ortiz's round, 10-9.

Round 6: It's more of the same in the beginning, with Ortiz circling, left, right, and jabbing and countering. Diaz continues to pressure, but not melevolently. Ortiz is content to peck away and counter. They clinch. A clash of heads opens Diaz's cut even worse over his right eye. The ringside doctor allows the fight to continue. Ortiz remains patient, jabbing, moving and firing even-handedly. Ortiz's round, 10-9.
