Roy Williams Tells Cops to Remove Fan Who Yelled, 'Don't Miss'

In a shocking overreaction to a harmless comment from a fan, North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams instructed police officers to forcibly remove a fan from the Tar Heels' game against Presbyterian on Saturday.

Dan Wiederer, the college basketball reporter for The Fayetteville Observer, explains that with North Carolina forward Deon Thompson on the free throw line, a fan yelled, "Hey Deon, don't miss it!"

When he heard that, Williams told staff member John Dubis he wanted the fan removed, and Dubis sent two law enforcement officers to remove the fan (a third officer came over to assist the first two). And with that, the fan was dragged out of the arena.

Asked about it afterward, Williams said, "I don't think anybody should yell anything negative at our players. Period. Let's don't make it a bigger thing than it is."

Actually, it is bigger than Williams seems to realize: For Williams to remove a fan for such a harmless comment is reprehensible. It's also shockingly hypocritical, as anyone who has ever seen a North Carolina home game knows that North Carolina fans have said far worse things to visiting players without being removed.

Furthermore, what on earth were those police officers doing? Police officers attend North Carolina basketball games to keep the peace, not to act as Roy Williams' personal goon squad. The officers should have told Williams that they had no authority to remove the man -- and told Williams that he had no authority to tell them what to do.

This was the act of a bully. Williams should be ashamed.
