Shavlik Randolph hasn't been bad for the Heat this year. He's been a solid guy and somebody's got to fill out the end of the bench. But apparently it wasn't enough, as the Heat released the 26-year-old 4-year vet. But more interesting was how head coach Erik Spoelstra framed the release today. "This will give us a little bit of flexibility, in case we can make a move," Spoelstra said.
Now, that's nothing forceful or stunning. But the Heat are under 15 men for the first time this season and in the middle of a drastic fall back to the pack after a nice start. The winds of change, they are a blowin' -- and Pat Riley is notorious for being willing to make changes.
With this being the most important nine months of the Heat's history with Wade's upcoming free agency, you have to look at this as a sign that the Heat are even more firmly on the block.
The question is, what are they making room for?
You have to figure Jermaine O'Neal, even with his resurgence this season, is movable, especially considering his expiring contract ($22.9 million) and the dearth of available centers in the league. But the Heat have wanted to move Michael Beasley to the power forward position for a long time, and Udonis Haslem, who also has an expiring contract ($7.1 million), has a lot of value as a versatile big who knows how to win.
With the Wizards also plummeting into the ether, is it possible the Heat and Wizards could work something out? The Heat need to target players with talent ready to play. They can't stockpile prospects or draft picks; they need contributors to form a core to convince Wade to stay. There are possibilities out there, and you can bet the Heat are going to explore them. Don't expect anything soon, however; Riley will take his time and make sure he's got the best deal possible before pulling the trigger on this group.
