If any teams were wondering about Aroldis Chapman's stuff or health, their questions should be answered.According to a person who saw the Cuban defector throw a side sessions Tuesday in Houston, "He's got the package."
ESPN.com reported 15 teams watched the 21-year-old left-hander throw. FanHouse's source estimated 9-10 teams were in attendance. Media members were barred from the workout, which took place at an indoor baseball facility.
"He was nice and loose," the source said. "Tremendous body. Very fast arm. Three above-average pitches, up to 96 (mph on the fastball). Just a tremendous talent. ... It's really good stuff."
The fastball was clocked at 93-96 mph, and Chapman showed a slider and changeup as well.
With a high waist, lean body and long arms, Chapman has a unique look, the person said.
"Usually guys throw 10 pitches," he said, "and you say, 'He reminds me of ...' But there was none of that."Teams will have to base their evaluation of Chapman on this side session, and perhaps others, along with his limited appearances in international competition.
ESPN.com has reported that the Red Sox made a $15.5 million offer to sign Chapman.
