The college basketball season is only five weeks old and the youth on display in Kentucky is proving that experience isn't necessarily needed to win awards -- or games, for that matter. On Monday, Kentucky guard John Wall was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for the fourth straight time. The only other player to win the award this season was Eric Bledsoe, also a Kentucky freshman, who won it in the season-opening week. And that may be because Wall did not play in Kentucky's first game against Morehead State.
Since missing that first game of the season, Wall has poured in 18.1 points and 7.1 assists per game while averaging 35.1 minutes player per contest. He's scored 20 points or more in four of his nine games and twice recorded a double-double.
Wall is the only player in SEC history to win this award four straight times and coaches around the conference feel that basketball fans haven't heard the last of Wall's name being called out for this honor.
He's likely to want the award each and every week. The question remains -- can anyone come a take it from the outstanding freshman? To hear Auburn Coach Jeff Lebo, Wall could extend that record deep into the season.
"He's certainly worthy of it," Lebo said, "for as many weeks as he wants it, probably."
