WBC super featherweight (130 pounds) champion Humberto Soto will rise to lightweight (135) in an attempt to defeat former two-time titlist Jesus Chavez on Saturday night as part of a four-bout, pay-per-view broadcast by Top Rank Promotions.Soto-Chavez will be aired from Cancun, Mexico, as the start of the Latin Fury co-feature, when Soto, of Tijuana, puts his record of 49-7-2 with 32 KOs on the line against Chavez (44-6, 30 KOs), a former IBF king.
In addition, WBA interim bantamweight (118 pounds) titlist Neomar Cermeño (18-0, 10 KOs), of Anzoategui, Venezuela, will defend against Alejandro Valdez (22-3-2, 16 KOs), of Ciudad Obregon, Mexico.
From there, the broadcast will shift to Youngstown, Ohio, where 27-year-old WBC and WBO middleweight (160 pounds) champion Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 31 KOs) will defend his belts against 29-year-old Miguel Espino (20-2-1, nine KOs) of North Hollywood, Calif., from the Beeghly Center.
On the Pavlik-Espino undercard, unbeaten Armenian-born junior middleweight (154 pounds) Vanes Martirosyan (25-0, 16 knockouts) of Glendale, Calif., takes on NABF champion Willie Lee (17-5, 10 KOs) of New Orleans, in a 12-rounder.
"This card -- the end-of-the-year card -- is truly an outstanding one. And we are going to do what we haven't done before – a pay-per-view show from two different countries," said Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank. "Valdez will be fighting in front of his hometown fans against undefeated interim champion, Neomar Cermeño of Panama. That will start the telecast."
Ring announcer Michael Buffer will take over in Youngstown, where the undercard also features Nigerian-born, former world heavyweight champion Samuel Peter (32-3, 25 KOs) of Las Vegas against Gabe Brown (18-12-4, 12 KOs) of Pensacola, Fla., in an eight-rounder.
In an eight-round clash of featherweights (122 pounds), Miguel Angel Garcia (18-0, 15 KOs) of Oxnard, Calif., meets Yogli Herrera (22-12, 15 KOs) of Sucre, Colo.
Middleweight Matt Korobov (8-0, six KOs) of Ortukan, Russia, and welterweight (147) Willie Nelson (12-0-1, eight) of Cleveland will also be in action.
Korobov takes on Ken Dunham (6-11-1, four) of Charlotte, N.C., and Willie Nelson (12-0, eight) faces Doel Carrasquillo (12-13-1, 10) of Fredericka, Del.
