Tiger Woods is in the news again, but mercifully, it's for something positive and sports related: the world's No. 1 ranked golfer and recent tabloid celebrity has been named the "AP Athlete of the Decade."A whopping 56 PGA Tour victories, including 12 major victories, over the last 10 years apparently outweighed any negative press sent his way over the past three weeks, as Woods received 56 of the 142 votes cast by AP member editors since last month.
It may be worth noting, of course, that most of the ballots were returned before Woods' accident on November 27. Of course, it's also worth noting that Michael Phelps, who also received some highly negative press in the past year, finished fourth with 15 votes, sandwiching Lance Armstrong (second, 33 votes) and Roger Federer (third, 25 votes).
Regardless of the voting timeline and anyone's current opinion of Woods' as a person off the course, it's impossible to argue against his success as an athlete -- Tiger transcended his sport more over the past 10 years than any other athlete en route to establishing himself as one of the greatest golfers -- and overall athletes -- of all-time.
