Nick JohnsonFree agent Nick Johnson has reached an agreement with the Yankees on a one-year, $5.5 million contract and the deal is expected to be finalized soon. With Mark Teixeira at first base, Johnson will take over the designated hitter position vacated when Hideki Matsui signed with the Angels earlier in the week.

In tandem with last week's Curtis Granderson trade, this move seems to signal the end of the Johnny Damon era in New York and in the linked AP story above, Scott Boras all but confirms that the Yankees are moving in a different direction. That would leave Melky Cabrera to play left field while Granderson mans center and Johnson DHs.

Johnson is a very good top-of-the-lineup hitter when healthy. Last year, he put up a .426 OBP in 133 games with the Marlins and Nationals, which is only slightly better than his .402 career line. He only played 38 games in 2008 because of a torn ligament in his wrist and he didn't play at all in 2007 because of a broken femur. He's also missed time with a broken hand, back problems, and a broken cheekbone.

Of course, the Yankees should be familiar with all of this. Johnson played for them from 2001-2003 before being traded to Montreal. Maybe he'll be more durable as a DH, but the Yanks should probably have a backup plan in mind, just in case.
