If I were John Calipari, and I had just been on the receiving end of a bitter blast from Bob Knight questioning my integrity, I'd probably reply with something along the lines of, "I don't need any lectures about integrity from a man who physically abused his players."

John Calipari is a bigger man than I am.

Calipari, the Kentucky coach who was ripped by Knight for putting Memphis and UMass on probation, took the high road when he was asked to respond to Knight's comments.

"I'm a big fan, respect him as a basketball coach, always have," Calipari said of Knight. "As a matter of fact, I took my staff down to Texas Tech, spent the day, watched them practice, helped me with the dribble drive, made it better. Don't agree with what he said, but it doesn't change how I feel about him."

The truth is, both Knight and Calipari are excellent coaches who have engaged in some serious misconduct. With Calipari, that misconduct involves violations of NCAA rules at both UMass and Memphis. With Knight, that misconduct involves mistreatment of his players and an inability to control his temper. I'm not sure either one of them is in a particularly good position from which to criticize, which is why I think Calipari's approach is the better one.
