In January, Saturday Night Live will return to being both new and unfunny, but there is some good news for folks still clinging to the hope of an occasionally humorous show: Charles Barkley will be hosting.Barkley, everyone's favorite NBA personality, will be joined by Alicia Keys, which is at the other end of the musical spectrum from when Chuckles last hosted in 1993 and Nirvana performed. Another difference? Chuck's figure. In 1993 he was still in his NBA-playing prime, and as you'll see from the YouTube below, quite skinny.
And now, he's quite fat. But with girth comes experience, improved acting skills and public speaking chops. Which should translate into a pretty funny performance. Or, worst case, he's only mildly amusing and immediately locks up the top spot for "funniest show of the season."
Below for your viewing pleasure, a lengthy and amazingly crappy YouTube of Barkley and Nirvana shooting promos for their show way back when. I would advise you only to view for the 2:30-ish mark when Charles deadpans, "You know, Ma, Nirvana -- your favorite" and for the realization that in 1993 we didn't have YouTube -- or the internet -- and we were all probably better off for it. Also: Dave Grohl looks like he's 12.
(Ed. Note: As noted by Brendan below, it's actually SNL's return from "winter break," not the start of a new season. My apologies.)
