Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews, a junior who led the nation in rushing yards per game in 2009, has decided to league school and enter the 2010 NFL draft. The decision was reported by NFL Draft Bible and Joe Schad of ESPN.
Mathews carried 276 times for 1,808 yards and 19 touchdowns this season, including 31 carries for 144 yards and two touchdowns in Fresno State's New Mexico Bowl loss to Wyoming. Unfortunately, Mathews lost a fumble in the fourth quarter, helping set up Wyoming's come-from-behind win. So Mathews' final game will not be remembered fondly in Fresno.
But his career will be remembered fondly, and teammates speak about him in reverent terms: One teammate called him the best running back in the country, and another said of the loss to Wyoming, "We had Ryan Mathews on our side. I thought we were the better team."
Mathews is making the right decision by heading to the NFL. Running backs get used up and thrown away quickly in football, and Mathews is ready to start plying his trade for a team that will pay him. He should be a solid NFL player.
